Seven Additional Auto Insurance Coverages
Most people know the basic auto liability insurance coverages. In fact, minimum property damage and bodily damage liability insurance for automobiles are mandated in every state.
However, there are several other coverages that can be inexpensive and can really give you a lot of protection, especially in a time of need.
Roadside Assistance- Imagine that you’re stranded on an unfamiliar road because you car engine went dead or won’t start. What do you do? If you purchased roadside assistance, all you’d have to do is call a number to receive assistance. The coverage provides car towing and minor repairs at the scene (like a flat tire or jump starting your car).
Gap Coverage- This pays the difference between the amount you owe on your loan or lease and the actual cash value of your car. It kicks in if your car is totaled in a covered accident. For example, if you owed 10k on your car, but it was only worth 6k, gap coverage would pay the 4k difference. It’s an inexpensive coverage for the potential payout.
Rental Reimbursement- If your car is rendered not drivable because of a covered accident, rental reimbursement will pay for a rental vehicle. For example, it may pay you $35 per day for 30 days to rent a car. If you have to use this, it’s usually best to go to the rental company recommended by the insurance company.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage- If you do not live in a “no fault” state (where your own insurance will cover your losses) you might want to consider purchasing this coverage. It insures you against certain types of losses caused by drivers with little or no insurance. It could also cover losses like lost wages and losses that occur to any passengers in the vehicle.
Medical Payments- This is also known as PIP (Personal Injury Protection). This covers various medical expenses for you and your passengers. It also extends coverage to you and anyone listed on the policy while riding in other cars or while walking.
Collision- This coverage pays to replace or repair your car if it’s damaged or totaled in an accident. This way, other than the deductible, you will not have any out of pocket expenses.
Comprehensive- This is also known as OTC (Other than Collision). It covers you if something happens to the vehicle that is not an auto accident. The covered perils include theft, vandalism, flood, fire, explosions, hail, lightning and other non car crash incidents.
Check for a good rate for these coverages. Make sure they make sense to you financially if you decide to purchase them.
